Latest News in the Electric Scooter Market: Up to 130 Kilometers on a Single Charge, Smart Controls, and Enhanced Safety

Electric scooters have become an essential part of urban mobility – they are convenient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly. Increasingly, people are choosing them not only for leisure but also as a practical alternative to cars or public transportation, especially in large cities where traffic congestion and parking challenges are part of daily life. Their popularity and the whole market have remained steady for years. Manufacturers are constantly launching more advanced models that offer longer ranges, more powerful motors, enhanced safety features, and smart functions. With so many options available, even seasoned users may find it difficult to choose the right one.

Domas Šelekas, Brand Development Manager at ACC Distribution, shares key tips on how to navigate the wide selection of models and technologies. He also highlights the benefits of the latest Segway scooters and explains which features are most important when selecting an electric scooter – and how they impact everyday usage.

Battery Capacity and Range

According to D. Šelekas, one of the most important factors when purchasing an electric scooter is battery capacity: “The battery directly determines how far you can travel on a single charge. For typical city use, a range of 30–40 kilometers is usually enough. However, the exact range you will need depends greatly on how and where you plan to use your scooter.

“For those who travel longer distances or live in the suburbs, scooters with greater range are worth considering. Segway offers several models that meet this need. For instance, the Segway GT3 Pro can reach up to 138 km on a single charge, while the Ninebot MAX G3 E offers up to 80 km—ideal for longer commutes and regular use. Range for a single charge is often the deciding factor when selecting a model,” says D. Šelekas.

D. Šelekas adds that a larger battery is especially useful for daily commuting when you may not have the opportunity to recharge mid-day. It makes daily planning much easier. But it’s important to remember that real-world range depends on various factors such as speed, rider weight, terrain, wind resistance, temperature, and riding style. Segway addresses this by providing estimated ranges for different conditions, helping buyers make more informed choices.

Motor Power and Hill-Climbing Ability

“Motor power is another top consideration. Its output plays a key role in how the scooter handles inclines, accelerates, and performs overall.” D. Šelekas explains. “For typical city terrain, a 250 – 350 W motor is often enough – especially if the roads are flat and speeds are moderate. But for hilly areas or heavier loads, more power is essential.”

More powerful models allow for a smoother and safer ride, especially if the driver weighs more or is carrying extra luggage. “It’s important to realize that power is not just a number on paper – it directly determines the performance of an electric scooter on a real road,” he adds, highlighting several electric scooter models that clearly illustrate these differences.

With 7,000 W of maximum motor power (two motors with 3,500 W each, providing 2×1,700 W nominal power), the Segway GT3 Pro not only reaches an impressive speed of 80 km/h but also provides excellent traction even on gradients of up to 38%. However, as D. Šelekas points out, according to Lithuanian law, electric scooters with this amount of power are intended for recreational use only where there is no regular traffic or pedestrians, such as scooter parks or extreme sports tracks.

For urban use, the Ninebot MAX G3 E model with a 2,000 W motor (700 W nominal power) is very suitable. This model has a balanced power/performance ratio that allows for smooth riding up gradients of up to 30% with enough power for both flat and moderately difficult terrain.

It is also important to mention the Dynamic Traction Control System (Segway SDTC or TCS), which helps optimize engine power distribution between the wheels for better traction on slippery or bumpy roads.

Safety Aspects: Brakes, Lighting, Suspension

“Safety is one of the most important criteria to consider when choosing an electric scooter, especially when it comes to longer journeys or more challenging driving conditions,” emphasizes D. Šelekas.

First, the braking system. Electric scooters usually have different types of brakes: drum, electronic, or disc. “Segway models feature high-performance disc brakes that work efficiently even at higher speeds or in wet weather conditions. These brakes allow smooth braking with no abrupt jolts or skidding, which is essential for safety,” explains the expert.

Some of the more advanced Segway models, such as the GT3 Pro, even come with dual hydraulic brakes and ABS (anti-lock braking system), which ensure that the wheels don’t lock up during braking, so the rider maintains steady control, even in extreme conditions. Until now, such technologies have been more common in cars or motorcycles but are increasingly being introduced in high-end electric scooters.

The second important component is lighting. “When driving in town or on country roads, it is very important to be visible and have a good view of the road. I recommend models with bright LED headlights, turn signals, and rear brake lights. It’s not just about safety, it’s also about comfort when driving after dark or in low visibility conditions,” says D. Šelekas.

The third aspect of safety is suspension and riding comfort. “When driving on rough roads or over obstacles, proper damping absorbs shocks and helps maintain stability. Segway models such as the GT3 Pro and MAX G3 E have hydraulic or combined shock absorbers that allow you to ride comfortably on city pavement as well as on countryside or forest paths. Integrated stability support systems can also help to maintain better balance on uneven surfaces,” says the Brand Development Manager.

One of the advantages of Segway electric scooters is that their tires are “puncture-proof” (self-sealing). This means that even if your electric scooter hits a nail, you will be able to continue your journey because the hole in the tire will be filled with a gel layer so you can return home safely. Of course, he also reminds us that the most important safety feature is a helmet.

Quality and Durability

Most buyers in Lithuania see an electric scooter as a long-term investment. “Consumers tend to buy a vehicle that will not only look attractive for the first season but will also last reliably for several years without constant breakdowns or expensive repairs,” says D. Šelekas.

While the more economical models may seem to offer a lower price, they often have some disadvantages: shorter range, lower engine power, weaker construction, and less efficient braking and suspension systems. “These models may look attractive at first, but in the long term, they may cost more due to more frequent breakdowns and limited performance. For that reason, investing in a higher-end model is often a more cost-effective solution,” he explains.

In Lithuania, state compensation for disposing of an old, polluting car has had a particular impact on buyers’ choices. “Government support has definitely encouraged people to choose higher-end electric scooters. This support makes buyers more confident to select higher quality models with more additional features and greater reliability, such as Segway, which offers a good balance of durability and functionality.”

In addition, more and more customers are starting to look beyond the initial price of a scooter to additional values such as after-sales service, availability of spare parts, the reliability of the service network, and the reputation of the manufacturer. “Buyers often ask how long the warranty will be valid for and whether it will be easy to find original parts after 2 – 3 seasons of use. Segway is one of the most reliable choices on the market in this respect,” says D. Šelekas.

Smart Technologies and Additional Features

According to D. Šelekas, additional technologies are becoming an increasingly important factor when choosing an electric scooter, especially among younger buyers who value not only the practicality of the micromobility vehicle but also its smartness, functionality, and integration with daily use technologies.

Many Segway models come with Segway AirLock, a contactless unlocking feature that allows you to lock and unlock your scooter via a smartphone app without using physical keys. This feature is particularly useful for daily use in urban areas where you often have to stop and leave your scooter for a short time.

Another feature that’s becoming increasingly appreciated is compatibility with Apple Find My system. It is an additional security solution that allows users to track the location of their scooter if, for example, the scooter is lost or stolen.

One of the newest and most significant features of Segway scooters is the integrated navigation system. This system allows you to plan routes directly on the scooter’s screen or synchronize with your smartphone. This is especially useful when driving on unfamiliar routes or for planning your city journey efficiently. It is important to note that this feature will be available with the latest operating system updates.

In addition, the Segway Smart Mobile App allows you to remotely adjust various scooter settings, such as the speed limit and riding modes, and you can check for software updates and get diagnostic data. “The app allows users to fully control the functionality of the scooter and even customize its features to suit their own needs,” notes D. Šelekas.

In summary, he notes that the selection of electric scooters today is vast. Each model has its own advantages, so it’s important to consider your daily routes, road surfaces, expected load, and need for additional features. As the expert points out, investing in a better-quality model often pays off not only in longer life but also in greater comfort, safety, and a wider range of uses.
